September to March is the reliable window

Munnar and Wayanad are pleasant most of the year, but the months after the monsoon through early spring bring the clearest skies and the least chance of landslide-related road closures on the ghat sections. December and January are also the coolest, which matters more in Munnar than most visitors expect.

The monsoon has its own appeal, with caveats

June to August turns both destinations a deep green and thins out the crowds considerably. The trade-off is road conditions — ghat roads can be slower and occasionally closed after heavy rain, so build a buffer day into the itinerary if you are travelling in this window.

Plan the drive time realistically

Kochi to Munnar is roughly four hours under normal conditions; Kochi to Wayanad is closer to five and a half. Both routes involve winding ghat sections that are best driven in daylight, so an early start from Kochi is usually more comfortable than an evening departure.
