The temple sits high in the Western Ghats in Pathanamthitta district, reached on foot from the designated access points rather than by road. Many devotees arrive having kept the forty-one day vratham — the period of austerity, simple food and daily prayer that precedes the climb — and travel carrying the irumudi kettu. Neither is compatible with a rushed or uncertain journey.
That shapes how we plan these trips. Departures are worked backwards from when you want to reach the access point, not from what suits a driver’s roster. Rest halts are scheduled rather than improvised. Vehicles are chosen with room for provisions and bedding as well as passengers, and with a step height that older members of the group can manage without help.
The season matters too. Between the Mandala Pooja and Makaravilakku period, from mid-November to mid-January, traffic on the approach roads is heavy and the arrangements for private vehicles change from day to day. Our drivers run these routes repeatedly through the season and are briefed on the position that applies on your travel date — which is usually the difference between a calm arrival and a long wait in the wrong place.
