Start with passengers and luggage, not price

It is tempting to book the cheapest category available, but the real cost of an undersized vehicle shows up on day two of a trip, when everyone is tired of sitting three-across in the back seat. Count adults, children and large bags separately — a family of four with two suitcases and a stroller often needs an SUV rather than a sedan.

Hill routes favour higher ground clearance

If Munnar, Wayanad or Thekkady are on the itinerary, an SUV or Innova handles the ghat sections more comfortably than a sedan, particularly if the trip falls in the monsoon months when road surfaces are less predictable.
